The distinctive timber building with sprawling outdoor deck is just 12 minutes from Christchurch airport, surrounded by pretty vineyards and home to easily the best-known winery restaurant in the area. Make sure you book a table for lunch because they’re a busy spot. Totally child-friendly, there’s also a pretty outdoor pavilion event space that connects the lawns, vineyards and restaurant – it’s fast becoming the go-to place for high-end weddings and functions.
Things To Know
IT entrepreneur (and hooker for the West Melton RFC) Philip Caunter is the force behind Melton Estate, together with his wife Tracy and winemaker Scott Berry. Known for their unique sparkling riesling, they also produce pinot gris, chardonnay, pinot noir, riesling, rosé and sauvignon blanc. Call Philip in advance to arrange a tour around his vineyard – he’d be happy to oblige.
The Summer Love Riesling is crisp, citrus-driven and a must for anyone who likes a hint of sweet in their sparkling wine.
Melton Estate Restaurant
Melton Estate was recently awarded a Beef and Lamb Excellence award – the slow-roasted merino rump is a menu hero.
