Poppies Martinborough

Setting
With its rusting wrought-iron gates and established plane trees, cypresses and bay trees, this tasting space, wine lounge and wedding venue looks as though it’s been here for decades; however it’s actually one of the newest and hottest spots to visit in the region. Elaborate pieces of sculpture by Brett Harman are everywhere, from the replica 1930s racing car in the carpark to the amazing chandelier in the ballroom; but the six-metre-long velvet couch in the lounge is jaw-dropping.

Things To Know
Owned by husband-and-wife team Shayne and Poppy Hammond, the building is modelled on a sketch Shayne drew while the couple was holidaying, and the stately chic interior was inspired by Poppy’s scrapbook, which is full of gorgeous homes from overseas magazines. The wines are designed to drink young and with food – good news because the platters designed by Madeleine Young in the kitchen are way beyond ordinary.

Our Picks
The pinot gris is gorgeous, the grapefruit-driven chardonnay is crafted from old vines and the gewurztraminer is spicy and complex.

Plus
The toilets (male and female) are a marvel; glamour doesn’t even begin to describe the decor.
