A 20-kilometre drive from Turangi, Floating Rock is situated on the southwest corner of Lake Taupo. You’ll find the cellar door on the second floor of a weatherboard building set amongst the vines. Manager Will Shirer is the friendly face at the cellar door and his relaxed demeanour reflects Floating Rocks laidback vibe, so settle in on the large balcony and enjoy the stunning views of the home vineyard, Mt Rangitukua and the Kuratau River valley while tasting.

The winery is committed to environmental practices – the grapes are organically grown and the vineyard has been accredited by Sustainable Wines NZ.The wines are made at Moana Park Winery in Taradale, Hawke’s Bay. Floating Rock specialises in pinot gris but also makes a methode traditionnelle, rosé and, depending on the crop that year, a pinot noir. The cellar door also doubles as a cafe serving wood-fired pizzas, potato wedges, fresh-baked cookies, smoothies and good coffee.
The sweet and silky Ice Wine is perfect with rich cheeses.
Estate-grown cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil is also available to buy.
