Setting
Located in a rustic family farmhouse on the Takapau Plains, this is a rural cellar door that is the epitome of casual family fun. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnics and platters and settle comfortably at one of the hand-hewn timber tables on the deck or out in the garden.

Things to know
Ex-All Black John Ashworth fell in love with wine during his time touring France. After buying the farm in 1986, he and wife Jo decided to have a go at doing it themselves. Today their son Leith is the winemaker and he’s doing a cracking job crafting a diverse range of wines that boast rugby-themed names.

Our picks
The Late Charge Riesling and the Corner Post Chardonnay both possess real character, while the Side Step Gewurztraminer has a spicy backbone. However, the Body & Soul Pinot Noir is the real hero.

Plus
Children will love the sheepdogs, cats, goats, lambs and sheep that gambol around the property; while rugby fans will enjoy not only meeting John, but viewing the wealth of rugby memorabilia on display.
