Setting
Not many cellar doors in the country can claim that they look over a vineyard that’s been growing grapes for nearly 100 years. Here, right on the edge of urban sprawl, is a piece of West Auckland wine history. Babich is deservedly proud of its heritage, but is also very modern in its approach to wine styles – you’ll find all the contemporary varieties represented here, along with up-and-coming future stars. At the cellar door a selection of snacks is available to purchase but you are welcome to bring a picnic. Sit on the deck and enjoy the serene views of the vineyard and spacious lawn with established trees. Afterwards, enjoy a game of petanque on the lawn.
Things To Know
General manager David Babich is the third generation of the family to be involved in the winery, which was founded by Croatian immigrant Josip Babich in 1916.
Our Picks
Babich Marlborough wines, especially sauvignon blanc and pinot gris, are fabulous with juicy, lively flavours. From the Hawke’s Bay, try the iconic Irongate Chardonnay and Bordeaux blend – among the most elegant and stylish wines in the country.
