Mount Edward

Setting
Tucked away up Coalpit Rd in Gibbston, Mt Edward is worth seeking out. The terracotta winery’s tasting room is filled with art and opens on to the steep Drumlin riesling vineyard and the public reserve below, but there’s nothing staid about the irrepressible director Duncan Forsyth and his team.

Things To Know
Despite the sense of fun, the wines are serious and some of the best in the area. Mount Edward wines are from the organic estate vineyards – the Morrison in Lowburn, the Muirkirk in Bannockburn and the Drumlin by the winery – while the earlier-drinking Earth’s End wines come from selected growers.

Our Picks
Don’t miss the lush grüner veltliner, the limey riesling, and compare the single-vineyard pinot noirs with the estate pinot noir. Duncan or winemaker Anna Riederer might show you other vintages too.

Plus
Ask about the charcuterie hanging behind the tasting counter – Duncan makes it from his own pigs. It’s not for sale but he’ll happily give you a taste. Don’t miss the wacky tee shirts either, sporting “A momentary lapse of riesling” and other quirky texts.
