Hinton Estate

Setting
The Hintons have been growing fruit near Alexandra since 1910, but fifth-generation Howie Hinton and his wife, Sarah, decided to expand into grapes. Howie makes the wine in a former rabbit factory built during the depression when “underground mutton” found a ready market. The large building alongside the Central Otago rail trail in Alexandra’s small industrial area also houses the tasting room where you’ll usually meet Sarah or Howie. The history of the Hinton family orchards and the rabbit factory displayed on the walls makes fascinating reading.

Things To Know
There are several pinot noirs – the accessible Hill Country, the Estate and the premium Barrel Selection – as well as merlot, riesling, pinot gris, gewurztraminer, viognier and a refreshing summer rosé.

Our Picks
Try the lively riesling, the fresh pinot gris, the mouth-filling viognier and the good-value, spicy Hill Country Pinot Noir.

Plus
In season the Hintons also sell fruit picked from their orchard.
