Setting
Nestled between the rugged Waitakere Ranges and friendly West Auckland suburbs, this cellar door combines the best of both worlds: close enough to be part of the city (just 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre), yet set amid the beautiful country of the Oratia Valley so that it feels a world away. No wonder this place buzzes with wine and food lovers. All its Auckland vineyards are now certified organic and they also source some grapes, mainly organic, from other regions, offering all the classic varietals plus a vibrantly fruity flora.
Things To Know
The Oratia Farmers’ Market, with 30 to 35 stalls every Saturday morning, is a favourite hangout for those looking for seasonal produce and other delicious offerings. Every second Sunday afternoon during summer, the same spot hosts “Music in the Market”.
Our Picks
The Far Paddock Pinot Gris fits the bill if you like easy-drinking juicy white. Fantail Island Syrah, also from Oratia, shows dark fruits and game complexity with a silky mouthfeel.
Artisan Vineyard Restaurant
Head here for sumptuous pies, platters and other hearty fare made from seasonal ingredients sourced as much as possible from Artisan’s own gardens and other local organic producers. During the summer months you can eat Mediterranean-style, choosing from a range of barbecued meats, served with a variety of salads.
