Setting
While the cellar door that greets you may be a classic New Zealand villa in appearance, step inside and you will be transported to Europe. This a good place to plan a meal break as there are two excellent places to eat – the fine-dining restaurant and the more casual bistro.
Things To Know
The Herzog family has been involved in the wine industry in Switzerland since 1630 and Therese and Hans Herzog owned a successful winery and restaurant in the Zurich region before deciding to move to Marlborough in the mid-1990s. The apple orchard they purchased has been turned into an estate vineyard supplying all the fruit for Herzog’s many differing wines. Winemaker Hans produces classic Marlborough varieties, and is also experimenting with a range of European varieties.
Our Picks
The full-bodied pinot gris is delightfully different to most New Zealand examples. The red wines, from pinot noir to montepulciano, are also outstanding examples of Marlborough meets Old World.
Herzog’s Gourmet Restaurant
Choose between a three-, five- or seven-course degustation menu, prepared by Michelin Star-experienced European chefs, with Herzog wines to match each course. The restaurant also boasts an extensive international wine list.
