Setting
This is the kind of place you can happily visit on a whim. Relatively close to the city, you’re right in the middle of the ruggedly beautiful Hunua Valley. The vineyard sits on the sun-baked valley floor with surrounding hills in the distance. It is unpretentiously and undeniably gorgeous. You can sit back and take it easy, or have fun with archery and clay target shooting on site.
Things To Know
The place is named after the first settler in the region, John Hill from Scotland. John and his wife Agnes arrived here in 1859 and made this remote place their home.
Our Picks
The reds, including cabernet franc, merlot and syrah, are richly fruited and generously proportioned with plenty of attractive flavours, expressing the warm climate of the region.
Winery Restaurant
The spacious room opens up to the covered patio right by the vineyard with the Hunua hills beyond. You’ll find familiar fare on the menu to satisfy your appetite, and, if you are the sharing type, there are platters and gourmet pizzas too.
