The Wine Portfolio

Setting
One of the longest serving cellar doors in the country, it’s always been a good place to stop by when visiting the region. Since 1978 this sturdy Cape Dutch-style building, with its pleasing retro room, has offered an excellent selection of wines sourced from their own vineyards in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough. The handy location on the main highway between Katikati and Tauranga makes it a great place to stock up for holiday drinking.

Things to Know
Previously Morton Estate, the brand has recently been sold to Lion New Zealand, but the team remains and continues to make wines under a number of labels. These include the well-priced Nikau Point and Mill Road; the new Leveret Estate and Falconhead ranges; and the ultra-premium Coniglio. You’ll also find a good range of methode traditionnelles available – call in advance to arrange a winery tour to see the sparkling wines being riddled.

Our Picks
If you love a chardonnay, try Nikau Point Reserve, and it’s hard to resist the rich dark fruit flavours of Leveret Estate Syrah. Also look out for the Leveret Estate Non-Vintage Brut.
