Omata Estate

Setting
As you drive down the long, metal driveway through the thick bush, it’s hard to imagine what’s in store for you at Omata. But once you walk up to the cellar door and restaurant, you’ll instantly see why this is a destination that people rave about. The views are stunning, looking over the home vineyard and across the water to Paihia, the bays and the shaded hills.

Things to know
The restaurant serves generous platters to share. The interior is impressive with heavy wooden beams in a symmetrical shape, but if the weather’s being kind you’ll want to nab a spot outside so you can admire the view as you sip and sup.

Our picks
The fruity pinot gris is hard to beat on a sunny day, while the spicy syrah is also recommended.

Plus
There’s so much to do and see in this part of beautiful and historic New Zealand, but if you are an oyster fan, you won’t want to miss sampling the generously sized, divine Orongo Bay pacific oysters.
