Setting
The timber and schist building that houses Seifried Estate’s cellar door is as solid as the reputation this company has created for its wines. The large tasting room allows visitors to gain an understanding of what it takes to make great wine, via a video reviewing a 12-month period. While you’re there, take a close look at the poster of vintage happenings – a reminder that it takes more than just a bottle to make a wine.
Things To Know
Seifried Estateis Nelson’s oldest wine producer, and also one of its largest. Since the first vines were planted in 1973 by Hermann and his wife Agnes, the company has been at the forefront of putting Nelson on the world’s wine map. Along with all the usual varieties, Seifried Estate also produces limited quantities of some more unusual wines, including würzer. Given there are only 100ha of this variety planted throughout the world, this may be one of the few opportunities you get to try it.
Our Picks
It was Sweet Agnes Riesling that began the Seifried Estate story, and it is still turning heads. But the complex Aotea Sauvignon Blanc is also a must-try.
