Takamatua Valley Vineyards

Setting
Just five minutes’ drive from the historic French settlement of Akaroa, this tiny cellar door has, in just a few short years, become one of the must-visit sites in the Banks Peninsula region. The view across the hills and beyond Akaroa harbour inlet is breathtaking and the winery building is a modern, Mediterranean-style maison that doubles as a popular wedding and function venue. The organic vineyard is located on north-facing slopes leading down to Takamatua Bay. Bird watchers will love the native bird life and you’re most welcome to pack a picnic to enjoy on the expansive lawn.

Things To Know
Allan Ransley and his Californian winemaker wife Timberly Hughes are the owner-operators who grow pinot noir, chardonnay, gewurztraminer, pinot gris and riesling. All the wines are made on site from 100 per cent estate-grown fruit.

Our Picks
In addition to pinot noir and pinot gris, they also produce Cuvée Blanc, a mystery blended white – try to figure out what’s in it.

Make sure you ask Allan to take you on his “Dirt to Bottle” vineyard and winery tour.
