Setting
Halfway along Ngatarawa Rd is Hawke’s Bay’s only co-operative cellar door, housing wines from micro producers Hawkes Ridge Wine Estate and BushHawk Vineyard. With its huge outdoor fireplace, the building looks like a glamorous version of a corrugated iron shed, with vast sun-soaked decks to lounge on.
Things to know
The people who work here are incredibly passionate about what they do because they are the producers – they all take turns at supervising the tasting room and there are always loads of laugh and stories being told. The platters are legendary, and they are available for functions.
Our picks
BushHawk produces New Zealand’s only fiano, an aromatic Italian white, and Hawkes Ridge has a robust, seriously savoury tempranillo.
