Unison Vineyard

Setting
Old barrels look as though they’ve rolled out to end their days under the olive trees surrounding the cellar door. Chances are you’ll see the two winery cats preening themselves under one of the many picnic tables. Or you can grab a beanbag and sit in the shade to enjoy a sip or seven as you watch owner Philip Horn racing around in his tractor.

Things to know
Philip and his wife Terry embarked on an impressive re-modelling of this iconic, bodega-styled Gimblett Gravels property that specialises in world-class red wines. The tasting room is now part of a humming upstairs cafe and function venue, and chef Zaan Tane ensures Unison’s Mediterranean flair follows through into his menu. The house specialty is an impressive cataplana, a Portuguese seafood dish designed for sharing and served in enormous, clam-shaped copper dishes. There’s space to park bicycles, well-behaved dogs are welcome, a fantastic kids’ play area is fenced and the ginger beer blind tastings are a hit with the under-agers.

Our picks
Enlisting the winemaking talents of Jenny Dobson, Unison is now going from strength to strength. The flagship Unison Selection is the best possible blend of merlot, syrah and cabernet sauvignon, and the syrah is sensational, as is the berry-laden rosé.
