“Stop, in the name of love” would work well as the advertising jingle for Wooing Tree. The winery was named after a large pine tree visible from the tasting room. Over past decades, Cromwell’s young and amorous have met beneath its boughs. Today the tree still sees its share of proposals and even weddings.
Handy to Cromwell, this modern cellar door is a bright, spacious place, hemmed in by vines on every side. The veranda is a popular place in summer and light lunches are served.
Family-owned and -run, Wooing Tree had its first vintage in 2005. “Pinot with passion” is the winery slogan and winemaker Pete Bartle crafts three excellent pinot noirs.
He also makes a Blondie blanc de noir (a white wine made with pinot grapes), as well as a chardonnay, a rosé and a pinot gris.
Our picks Try the range of pinot noirs: the top-flight Sandstorm Reserve, the Wooing Tree estate pinot and the good-value Beetle Juice.
Plus The cellar door also has an enclosed play area for children.
