Situated in Church Bay, Cable Bay is the closest winery to the ferry terminal – just a 12-minute gentle meander or five-minute taxi ride. Modern and spacious, it boasts glorious west-facing views to the city and a new covered courtyard adjacent to the chic wine-tasting bar where you can enjoy casual Mediterranean-style small plates. In front is a large sprawling lawn with scattered bean bags and a few stunning sculptures.

Regular live music events are becoming a feature – check the website for details. The large courtyard and lawn provides lots of room for the children to run around outside within line of sight of the relaxing wine-sipping adults.
The Waiheke Island Chardonnay is a specialty here, under the careful watch of winemaker Chloe Parkinson. The syrah, made from locally grown grapes, is also lovely. If it’s available, the Cable Bay Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also worth taking home.

Under the astute eye of young chef Sam Clark, the expansive restaurant leans towards the fine-dining end of the spectrum whilst managing to maintain a pleasing, relaxed vineyard restaurant informality. Try the Angus scotch beef with onions, soy caramel roasted turnips and beef crackling.
