Red Barrel Vineyard

Setting
Heading east along Te Mata Rd, this is the first cellar door you’ll come across. Don’t blink though, because it’s so small you might just miss it! Long-time cellar-door manager Charlene McDannold is the smiling face you’ll see when you step inside. She has fantastic knowledge of the history of this site, so make sure you quiz her during your wine tasting. You can also buy picnic supplies to enjoy on the lawn or in the beautifully landscaped courtyard with a glass of the good stuff.

Things to know
Owned by John and Juliette Lockie, this little parcel of land is planted in merlot and syrah grapes. The cabernet block was pulled out and replaced with chardonnay, which will be available the summer of 2014-2015.

Our picks
Winemaker Dave McKee (of Black Barn fame) is an expert at crafting gorgeous reds and award-winning chardonnay – so make sure you try the powerful syrah and succulent 2013 chardonnay.

Plus
At the time of printing, a large renovation of the Red Barrel cellar-door building was under way, with a new dining space planned.
